Dr. Peter Kim is a paediatric neonatal, general and thoracic surgeon with a full-time clinical practice.  He is a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto and an associate scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children’s Research Institute.  He has reported numerous innovations involving minimally invasive surgical techniques, including thoracoscopic thymectomy, thoracoscopic lung resections, and laparoscopic reconstruction of bile ducts for biliary atresia and choledochal cysts.  He is the resource expert for pediatric thoracic problems, with particular focus on the tracheal issues such as tracheal stenosis and tracheomalacia.  He currently co-leads the Airway Reconstruction Team (ART) at Sickkids which provides national and international expertise in complex airway diseases. In addition, he has expertise in pediatric vascular surgery, such as Rex and porto-systemic shunts.
Dr. Kim has active research programs supported by peer-reviewed grants from the CIHR, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Ministry of Research and Innovation. The developmental biology projects focus on the molecular and genetic mechanisms of gastrointestinal tract development and accelerated aging. Funding has recently been awarded to develop application specific surgical robotic systems for pediatric surgery, in particular an image-guided MIS-capable robotic arm called a KidsArm. Dr. Kim has been actively involved in organizing and leading a province-wide and national network to monitor and provide access and care to mothers of babies diagnosed with birth defects, the Fetal Alert Network (FAN).  In addition, this clinical program investigates population-based projects to analyze clinical outcomes of birth defects.  Dr. Kim is a co-principal investigator in the CAPSNET National project supported by CIHR. He has trained a number of both clinical and research fellows, and has published extensively.  His trainees have received numerous national awards for their work.  His laboratory is open to anyone interested in pursuing investigative work.  Dr. Kim belongs to a number of professional organizations and has served on the Examining Board of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He continues to serve on the editorial board of Pediatric Surgery International and is the chair of the Program committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Surgery.
